France's Interior Minister discusses a new security plan addressing the rise in crypto-related kidnappings

France recorded 77 incidents of crypto-related kidnappings during the first half of 2026, marking a shocking 71% increase from 2025. The alarming statistics set off a new government security plan aimed at combating these heinous acts, which raise serious safety concerns for investors.

A Rising Threat in the Crypto Space

The surge in kidnappings kicked off with an incident in March involving a couple in Le Chesnay, where three men posed as police officers and forced the husband at knifepoint to transfer €900,000 in Bitcoin. In a frightening close call, the head of Binance France faced an armed break-in in February but escaped when the attackers couldn’t locate him.

Interior Minister Laurent NuΓ±ez confirmed these incidents are not isolated, revealing a troubling trend: many victims are targeted because Bitcoin transactions cannot be reversed. "Like a traditional robbery, once it’s gone, it’s gone," noted a concerned commenter.

The Criminal Landscape

  • 200 arrests made in the past year relating to past crimes or preemptive actions.

  • 724 individuals in the crypto space registered with an emergency identification platform.

  • In one instance from June, law enforcement quickly arrested perpetrators in the Somme, just eight hours after an incident where the victim utilized the emergency hotline.

"The wave of attacks stopped abruptly after a high-profile arrest in Morocco," said NuΓ±ez, indicating successful international efforts against organized crime.

New Security Measures Announced

In light of increasing violence, the government announced a three-pronged security strategy:

  1. Enhanced intelligence sharing to monitor and expose criminal organizations.

  2. Collaborative partnership with ADAN, France's digital asset sector association.

  3. Stronger international coordination aimed at confronting crime organizers.

Despite these initiatives, skepticism persists. Several commenters express concern regarding personal privacy. One user stated, "And politicians who reduce citizens' privacy are a concern."

Impact on the Community

The soaring crime rate raises questions for crypto holders. A commenter recently asked, "What percentage of victims were using Ledger devices?" Surprisingly, no clear data exists on the vulnerability of specific hardware wallets, but sentiments regarding personal security remain mixed.

The risks associated with Bitcoin are evident. One person brought up the potential consequences of being compelled to sell Bitcoin through an ETF.

Voices of Concern

Diverse opinions emerged from the community:

  • "If I hold Bitcoin through an ETF and an attacker forces me to sell would that be the same?" This highlights a growing anxiety about safety nets for investors.

  • "With an ETF, they’d force you to sell shares in your brokerage account, then buy crypto" This user noted the added friction could serve as a slight buffer but isn’t a full-proof safeguard.
